The base rate was calculated to be 32.5% by combining and averaging the rates from:

1. The number of women members registered under the sub-discipline of ‘Neural and Synaptic Structure’ in the Society for Neuroscience (33%, 67 women out of 199 members, with undergraduate and graduate students excluded).
2. The gender representation report published by the Human Brain Project in which women researchers working on ‘Brain Simulation‘ and ‘Brain Organisation’ projects were calculated to be 32%, (50 women out of 156 researchers).
